reagan was good at that, newt gingrich was good at turning the tables on questions this primary season. mitt romney would like to have some of that. that's not really his strong suit. the second best thing for mitt romney would be a major gaffe by president obama, so perhaps mitt romney could goad the president a little bit into some comments about small business other thans or something else. owners or something else. because the race is close enough that any change could have an impact. but, cheryl, historically debates have not moved the numbers all that much. four years ago when barack obama debated john mccain, mccain was down by five points when he went into his debate, and when he came out of the debate, he was down by six points. virtually no change. i think events on the ground, perceptions of the economy, economic news, perhaps things from the middle east still could have a bigger impact than these debates. cheryl: scott rasmussen, it's fascinating to see what your numbers are showing us, and they have been changing over the last several weeks. scott, thank you. >> thank you,

speaker newt gingrich. today, former presidential candidatri santorum in sou caro, d ser m demint t em esiki a and now that the deadline for akin to withdraw from the race has passed, it's looking like republicans may have no choice but to fall in line behind his campaign in a last-ditch effort to oust claire mccaskill and maybe grab the senate, which for some means they're just going to have to do a flat-out 180. ser blwae he many politicians who publicly urged akin to get out of here. >> you know, i think it's a distraction and "the wall street journal" again this morning said todd needs to get out of this ce, because the things he's for are actually being held ba by all the focus on him and so ene'de >> but late tuesday night, just after the 5:00 p.m. deadline, blunt issued a statement announcing his support for the congressman. "congressman akin and i don't agree on everything, but he and i agree the senate majority must chan. unouus'l rnor romno e working for the republican ticket in missouri and that includes todd akin." doggone it. and blunt isn't the only one changing its tune.

the president's efforts on stopping nuclear weapons in iran. but gingrich and i and tom ridge, we were talking about the importance of boosting the iranian opposition. >> so i want to talk politics if you'd indulge me. you're talking about much more serious stuff in many way, but only one question and then everyone can have at it. i was trying to think what do i want to know from you. only one thing. if obama, your guy, as he likes to say my guy, but your guy -- >> yours, his. >> -- wins, what confidence do you have, if anything, that he will be able to bridge the gap, that bipartisan gap any better than he has in this past four years recognizing that it appears that it has gotten worse and worse and maybe has made it worse? >> i'm an optimist. there's a glimmer of hope. as i go around the country, you are seeing republicans bragging about how they work well with democrats, democrats how they work well with republicans. >> this is an election. >> but my point is that i think you'll see the president unleashed, you'll see the president proposing comprehensive tax reform. i think he'll say that

gone to the web and looked up what newt gingrich was talking about. >> another question -- recently, one of mitt romney's operatives made the statement to reporters when they were pushing him on the claim about welfare. we will keep running that, we will not have our campaign did but -- dictated by fact checkers. probably a lot of news people were shocked by the cynicism they heard coming out of his mouth. jim, you have been around the longest -- did this surprise you? >> i really cannot say that i was. they had kind of behave that way all along. they were certainly not hurt -- terribly worried enough to change the rhetoric when something is pointed out to them. >> you mean the romney campaign? >> yes. i do not see a lot of evidence of trimming statements back to make a more accurate when they are repeated -- >> i do not know about that. this is -- my take on this, in the context of that question and answer, they were saying that this is the most effective ad. they said, that got four pinocchios. the response was, we are not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers. wh
